As I was checking the calendar to see what was happening in Texas music this weekend, I was reminded of fond memories. This weekend is the Real Texas Festival in Mesquite. Friday night’s entertainment will once again be headlined by Kevin Fowler.
It was one year ago that the Texas Music Journal crew really got started in our efforts to interview some of the top Texas artists, when we sat down with Kevin Fowler in his tour bus. Kevin was very gracious, a trait we have found runs common through most Texas music stars. He gave us all the time we wanted – in this case, about 20 minutes for the interview.
During the interview, we kept smelling what had to be some really awesome barbecue. When we finished, Kevin asked what it was. His manager told him that a fan had participated in a barbecue cookoff on the grounds, and had brought a platter of ribs for Kevin and the gang to enjoy. He opened them up, smelled them, and immediately offered to let us join in. Of course, we did. And they were delicious!
The headline for that story was “Eating Ribs with Kevin Fowler.” It set the tone for many stories during the past year. Later, during his show, we had our first chance to see what a Kevin Fowler crowd was like. More than 1,000 screaming fans in an outdoor festival environment was amazing. It’s not every day you get to see a “husky” fan (about 300 pounds) wearing a muscle shirt that proudly proclaimed, “Don’t Touch My Willie!”
The next day, we also had opportunities to interview the Bart Crow Band and Willie Nelson’s daughter. Everyone was great and had wonderful stories to tell.
That is the point of what we do. We try to find out the stories behind the artists, and bring them to you, our readers. Soon, we hope you also become our listeners and our viewers, as we incorporate audio and video into our stories.

This weekend, I will be in Austin. But I guarantee you, I will still be tasting those ribs!
