Roots-rock band Reckless Kelly’s 3rd Celebrity Softball Jam — a crazy game of softball played by band members, professional athletes and members of the media followed by a concert in centerfield — is set for May 1, 2011.
This year, in the “Reckless Recycling Program,” fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used baseball gloves, bats, shoes, catcher’s equipment and other baseball-related items to be collected at the gate of the Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express, and donated to youth players and leagues in need.
Songwriter Hayes Carll, Texas troubadour Dale Watson and “American Idol” runner-up Bo Bice will join Reckless Kelly and other musical artists already confirmed to take part in the softball game and five-hour centerfield concert (this year on two stages). Also confirmed are Micky & the Motorcars, Heidi Newfield, Charlie Robison, George Devore, Mary Cuttrafellow, Django Walker, Wade Bowen and Bruce Robison, with more to come.
Through April 30, tickets are $15 at the Dell Diamond box office and at www.rkcsj.org. At the gate on May 1, tickets will be $20. Kids 12 and younger get in free with adults.
Reckless Kelly donated more than $65,000 raised from the first two Celebrity Softball Jams, attended by more than 12,000 fans, with proceeds going to benefit area youth baseball groups.
“Every parent that has a boy or girl involved in baseball or softball has walked out to their garage and wondered what to do with all that equipment their child has outgrown,” says Reid Ryan, CEO of the Round Rock Express. “The Reckless Recycling Program is a great opportunity for those items to see the field again, with someone who would really appreciate it.”
In other news, Reckless Kelly and its co-founder Cody Braun have earned nominations in this year’s Lone Star Music Awards, to be presented on March 27 in the Texas Music Theater San Marcos.
Reckless Kelly was nominated for Best Live Act for its mind-blowing shows in great venues across Texas and the country. Band co-founder and multi-instrumentalist Cody Braun was nominated for Best Musician; his ways with fiddle and mandolin are well-known by music lovers and well-appreciated.
