of wine and smoked menthol cigarettes on the lawn,” said a smiling Annie Clark, the Dallas native otherwise known as St. Vincent,
at last Friday’s Summer Cut Festival.Clark, along with the Flaming Lips and Fitz and the Tantrums, headlined the first ever festival thrown by local public radio station KXT. The station has slowly become a staple in the Dallas music scene by catering to the tastes of its listeners, instead of treading the already well-worn mainstream radio path. With DJs spinning everything from The Shins to Coltrane to Muddy Waters to Iggy and the Stooges, it’s no wonder that the festival turned out a success. Several native Texas bands performed, including Telegraph Canyon ,Smile Smile, and Air Review, who blew up the side stage with a heady mix of ethereal droning and folksy finger-picking. Meanwhile on the main stage, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah rang in the summer with their brand of upbeat pop-rock, despite barely being able to face the audience because of the setting Texas sun. But even that couldn’t stop the indie/soul band Fitz and the Tantrums from bringing everyone in attendance to their feet. From the front of the pit to the back of the lawn, not a booty was left unshaken. St. Vincent took the stage at dusk, delivering a set full of eccentricity, robo-dancing and mind-melting girl guitar solos. She played several songs from her latest effort Strange Mercy, including “Year of the Tiger”, a song Annie co-wrote with her mother. “This one is for you, Mom”, she lovingly murmured before launching herself into the crowd for her next song, “Krokodil.” Never missing a note, Annie surfed across the hands of spectators two separate times before returning with the
hat of an ecstatic audience member sitting atop her wild curls. Crowd surfing became even more a part of the festivities when Wayne Coyne, lead singer of the Flaming Lips, brought his trademark “space-bubble” into the crowd an hour later. But Wayne’s human hamster ball almost paled in comparison to the rest of the spectacle that is a Flaming Lips show. With props such as strobe lights, disco balls, giant laser-emitting paper-mâché hands, confetti canons and fog machines, it’s evident why early reviews of the band from the 80s read “the punks have finally started dropping acid.” Their career-spanning set list included everything from fan favorites such as “She Don’t Use Jelly” and “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” to Pink Floyd covers, ending with a beautiful sing-along rendition of the profound “Do You Realize??” Overall the festival was a booming triumph for KXT and the almost untouched Dallas indie music scene alike. I guarantee I was not the only audience member in the packed venue walking away shaking my head in awe. It will truly be a sight to behold when they inevitably top it with next year’s Summer Cut.
