Email this Post Print this Post

Dear Songwriters:

This is a notice of the August workshop for NSAI Houston North Metro Chapter, for Wednesday, August 5th at Dosey Doe Coffee Shop, 25911 I-45 North, The Woodlands, TX, beginning at 7:00pm.  For directions to Dosey Doe:  Dosey Doe features a full dinner menu and outstanding hot and cold beverages. It is open to the public during the workshop and performance rounds, so please bring family and friends. Under 18 years okay. (Young children get bored easily; please leave them at home!)

Note: Non-members may participate during the workshop and group critique portion of the evening, but after 2 visits, they must pay a $15 auditing fee.   The performance portion of the evening beginning at 8:30pm is open to everyone, free of charge.

7:15-7:45pm   WORKSHOP: “Cuts In Different Genres” (This month’s program is taken from the featured webcast from 06/25/2009, available to NSAI members on the NSAI website. The pro-teacher was Jason Blume)

About Jason: Jason Blume is one of the few writers to ever have songs on the Country, Pop, and R & B charts – all at the same time. His songs are on albums and videos that have sold more than 50 million copies — with two cuts by Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, recordings by Jesse McCartney, a #1 R & B video by J’Son, five cuts by country star Collin Raye, and recordings by artists including the Gipsy Kings, John Berry, Steve Azar, and the Oak Ridge Boys. His top five single, “Change My Mind” received a BMI Million-Air Award for more than one million airplays.

7:45-8:30pm   GROUP CRITIQUE

  • If you wish to present a song for group critique, it is first come, first served. Please arrive no later than 7:00pm and sign up for your critique. There are no advance signups, unless you’re coming from out of town.
  • Due to the time factor, we will limit the group critique to the time allowed, which is a maximum of 7 tunes.
  • You must sign a release form to present your song for critique.
  • Please bring at least 10 typed copies of lyrics to your song that you wish to have critiqued for the group to look on as you either present the song live, or by a recording.  We cannot properly critique your song unless lyrics are provided.
  • Please bring your keyboard or guitar if you will be accompanying yourself. A playback system for CDs is provided over the house PA system. If you’re presenting via your iPod or other MP3 player, please bring the proper adapter cords for house system playback, or bring your own personal speaker system.

  • Signup is first come, first served, via replying to this email.
  • If you performed last month, please give someone else the opportunity this month-thanks!
  • First-timers and out-of-town performers will be given priority consideration.
  • Performing writers will be confirmed by Monday, August 3rd.
  • There are three 30-minute rounds, each with 3 songwriters doing 2 songs, a total of 9 songwriters for the night.
  • There are 3 mics and 3 line inputs provided.
  • No keyboards are provided.
  • Please be tuned up and ready to perform prior to starting your round.

We’ve implemented a monthly service called Song Coach, in addition to our monthly workshop. Song Coach can assist you in gaining some muscle in your writing to get you in top shape to compete in the commercial songwriting arena. Song Coach is available to work with one songwriter each month prior to the beginning of the workshop, from 6:00pm to 6:55pm, at Dosey Doe.  This month’s Song Coach is Connie Mims. If you would like to book this slot with Connie, please email here by Monday, August 3rd.

Do you want to know why? Because if you join or renew from June 1st through August 31st, our chapter will rack up a bunch of cash incentives points from NSAI, which means we can have some interesting touring programs and speakers! In order for us to receive these incentives, you must let me know that you’re re-upping your membership or joining for the first time, so we can let the membership people in Nashville know in time.

We hope that everyone will come out and support our first NSAI SONGWRITERS IN-THE-ROUND on August 31st, 7:30pm at Main Street Crossing, 111 W. Main St.(FM 2920), in Tomball. The evening is formatted very similar to the shows at The Bluebird Café in Nashville, presenting two rounds of three songwriters. The first round features our NSAI Houston/Clear Lake/Houston North Metro performing writers, and the second round beginning at 8:30 features touring performing songwriters hosted by Connie Mims.  This event will happen the 4th Monday of each month. Cover charge is $5.00. Here’s  the August lineup:

7:30pm  Scott Chance, Glynace Eastham and Alicia Selby

8:30pm  Host Connie Mims, with George Ensle and TBA

We hope to see you at a workshop or a round real soon!
