Texas music fans can help victims of the recent north Louisiana tornadoes this Saturday at the Levitt Pavilion.

A free benefit concert this Saturday at the Levitt Pavilion will help raise funds for those who suffered damages and losses because of the tornados that touched down in Arlington and the surrounding area last week. The concert is free, but cash donations will be collected to be dispersed through the local Salvation Army for those in need.

Melissa Lawson

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. with the Salvation Army Band. Betty Buckley, Tony Award-winning actress and recording artist will perform, followed by Melissa Lawson, Arlington country music artist who won NBC’s Nashville Star.

No clothing or food will be collected. Officials at the Salvation Army say that they have more than enough of those items. Cash donations will be collected and used for a variety of needs for those who suffered damages and losses who were not insured or underinsured.

Those attending the concert should bring lawn chairs and blankets to use on the lawn. Picnics and coolers are welcome, but no glass containers.

Texas music fans can enjoy a memorable Memorial Day with Smiles Charity.

Editor’s Note: The following comes from a charity I have seen in action. Smiles Charity is a group of people who are constantly working to help those in need. And the concerts are always fantastic!

The 2012 Smiles Charity Concert and Festival will be held Sunday May 27th 5:00-10:00 pm at the Adriatica outdoor concert venue. This year’s headlining act is Grammy nominee David Nail.

Also appearing on stage will be local favorites Maylee Thomas Band and teen band sensation, Lantic. The Memorial Day concert event will include a flyover by WWII era planes; kids’ area with bounce houses, games, and activities; local food and drink vendors; veterans’ wall dedicated to fallen Texas military heroes; and spectacular fireworks display.

The concert event is made possible by local sponsors Torchmark, Raytheon, Crest Auto Group, Dr. Buchanan Orthodontics, Baylor Medical Center McKinney, and Simpson Strong-Tie. Their support allows Smiles Charity to organize an event which draws thousands together for a great cause.

While admission is free, Smiles Charity will be accepting donations throughout the event to help build homes for severely wounded veterans. Cash and credit cards will be accepted for all donations, concessions, and $5 entrance fee for the kids’ area. Net proceeds from this year’s event will help build mortgage-free homes for Andrew Litz and Augie Pena. Please visit www.smilescharity.org for more information about how these two patriots not only served their country in combat, but also as hometown heroes upon their returns.

Supporters are encouraged to volunteer during the concert as hundreds of volunteers are needed to make the concert and festival a safe and successful event. Please register to volunteer at www.smilescharity.org and click on the volunteer tab.

Celebrate Memorial Day in McKinney on Sunday May 27th while enjoying this family-friendly concert and show your support for America’s military heroes with a generous donation. The concert will be held rain or shine. Feel free to bring blankets and lawn chairs, but coolers and pets are not allowed.

Smiles Charity was founded in 2008 to help build homes for local families in need, with current housing projects for wounded veterans. The results are tangible: Three homes have been built, three more are under construction and nearing completion, and two more homes will be started in 2012. Its mission is to bring the community together to change the world one home, one family at a time.

For more information about Smiles Charity, its mission, and its beneficiaries please visit www.smilescharity.org.

Miranda Lambert, Eli Young Band and Kelly Clarkson all won ACM Awards last night.

By Sam Moore

Talk about a fee-good story!

The Eli Young Band became the latest in a long line of Texas acts to receive national acclaim. Last night, “Crazy Girl” won for Best Song in the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas.

The four guys from Denton were not the only Texas winners. Miranda Lambert won for Best Female Vocalist and Best Album. And Kelly Clarkson was honored for Special Event, for her participation in “Don’t You Want To Stay” with Jason Aldean.

I was fortunate enough to hear the debut of “Crazy Girl.” Dec. 31, 2010, at Billy Bob’s New Year’s Eve Party in Fort Worth, Mike Eli announced to the sold-out crowd that they were about to perform their new song in public for the first time. When “Crazy Girl” ended, everyone knew they had just heard something special. Last night merely validated that.

Mike Eli chose last night’s acceptance to echo what he has told every crowd at every performance: If you really believe in something, and really want it, it can come true. And last night, it came true for the Eli Young Band. Congratulations!

The annual Texas Music Awards will take place in a new venue in Linden.

The 10th Annual Texas Music Awards will return to Linden Saturday, March 24, at the area’s newest venue, The Texas Music Barn, located inside the partially renovated Academy of Texas Music Building at 301 E. Houston St.

This will be the fourth show in Linden, as the city was host in 2006 and 2007 prior to being named as the permanent home in 2011.

The Academy of Texas Music World Headquarters Building, still under renovation by volunteers, is now the permanent home of the annual show, which is not only a high energy awards presentation show, but is the major fundraising event each year for the non-profit academy.

The funds raised are used to further the academy’s efforts toward music education programs, scholarships, recognition projects, and benevolence programs for musicians in need.

The show will have a festival-type feel this year, as there will be additional stages at the Tin Star Steakhouse and at the corner of Rush and Kaufman streets downtown. There will be vendors around the downtown stage.

“We want the community to be involved because we know how much it benefits Linden’s eventual goal of becoming a major musical marketplace,” said Lucky Boyd, co-founder of the academy. “The building, however, belongs to all of Texas with musicians and fans alike from all over the state being involved in the exciting growth process.”

Boyd says the seating capacity in the academy building is quite small, but there are ways around that obstacle, including presenting the show in segments during an all day event.

In addition to the free concerts inside the Tin Star Steakhouse from noon until 6 p.m. and the free outdoor concerts around the courthouse square, the after-party at Auntie Skinner’s Riverboat Club in Jefferson will also be free of admission costs. The party begins at 6 p.m. and will continue until 1 a.m.

The merchandise area will be inside The Armadillo Freight Company at 119 E. Houston, formerly known as the Tanner’s Mercantile building. Fans may purchase tickets to the show, souvenirs, and music by the award nominees.

The academy building, when finished, will house a concert hall, a gift shop, a small museum and library devoted to Texas music, a recording studio, a rehearsal hall, and lodging for touring musicians. There will also be an interactive training space in the venue that will benefit the community in many ways, Boyd said.

Tickets are $10, plus fees, per segment and there are three segments.

For the schedule and ticket information, visit www.texasmusicawards.org or phone 800-959-5796. Interested vendors should contact Alicia Taylor at 903-665-8144.

Texas music fans will enjoy the Western Swing style of Hot Club of Cowtown.

Western swing is coming to a theater in Grand Prairie this weekend. As part of a February/March tour through Texas, Hot Club of Cowtown will perform Saturday at 8pm at the Uptown Theater.

Since their first recording in 1998, the Austin-based band has grown to be the most globe-trotting, hardest-swinging western swing trio on the planet. They have opened stadiums for such artists as Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson and continue to bring their brand of western swing to a wide range of festival audiences all over the world. Drawing inspiration from jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, violinist Stephane Grappelli’s Hot Club of France, and from Bob Willis, the King of western swing, the trio has taken traditional western swing to a whole new level.

Individual tickets for Hot Club of Cowtown cost $16-$21.

Texas music fans will be treated to an evening of songs by some of the state's best songwriters, in Allen on Feb. 23.

Some of Texas’ celebrated songwriters will gather at the Allen Public Library to present an evening of music sure to prove that our state has bragging rights to the best tunes in the country.

Sponsored by Texas Roadhouse of McKinney and Bach to Books, this free program is offered 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 23. The lineup for this special evening includes at number of local musical talents.

Austin Cunningham

Songs by Garland native Austin Cunningham have been recorded by Hank Williams, Jr., Martina McBride, Dolly Parton and Wynonna Judd. His songs are featured on film soundtracks, including Ashley Judd’s Where the Heart Is, and the Richard Gere/Winona Ryder film, Autumn in New York. Austin has performed at the Sundance Film Festival for the Bluebird Café “On the Road” series.

An award-winning Texas singer-songwriter, Zane Williams’s writing credits include the top 20 Billboard hit “Hurry Home” recorded by Jason Michael Carroll. After 7 years on the road as a solo act and 2 years as a staff songwriter in Nashville, Williams returned to North Texas in 2008 and has since released two successful independent albums. The nationwide documentary “Troubadour, TX” is currently following his adventures with a full band.

Performing for over 20 years, Brad Allen began playing banjo at age 14 and progressed to fiddle, dobro, guitar, steel guitar and mandolin. An original member of the Skyriver Boys Bluegrass Band, Brad has performed at dozens of festivals and opened for Steven Curtis Chapman in Garland. Brad performs gospel, bluegrass, country and old time rock & roll.

A principle character on the docu-reality show “Troubadour, TX”, 22-year-old Kylie Rae Harris was nominated for Best New Female Vocalist in the State of Texas in 2011. Harris has been performing across Texas for five years and has shared the stage with Chuck Cannon, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Eli Young Band. Harris has released one album entitled “All the Right Reasons.”
Allen’s own Michael Ellis Empey has developed a unique style and his music is a sophisticated yet down home blend of Country, R&B and Jazz. He calls his sound “Country-Bluejazz.” In addition, for fifty years, Michael has written and performed comedy and worked with such notables as Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld and Robin Williams. Michael joined Peter Schless to produce “My Father’s Song.”

A singer-songwriter-fourth generation musician, Michael Prysock was deeply affected by life in rural Arkansas. Through his music, he tells achingly true tales of the influences of his family and the brotherhood of friends that helped raise him. Prysock skips the clichéd heart songs of romance and moves purposefully to lyrics that convey the struggles of real life.

Texas music fans will enjoy everyone from Radney Foster to Chris Hillman at the upcoming Threadgill Series in Greenville.

(Editor’s Note: The following news release was written by promoters for the Kenneth Threadgill Concert Series in Greenville.

The Kenneth Threadgill Concert Series opens its ninth season on Saturday night, February 25th with a Showcase of Five Decades of Trendsetting Country-Rock.

Chris Hillman

The legendary Chris Hillman and longtime musical partner Herb Pedersen will bring their acoustic duo to the historic stage of the Municipal Auditorium in Downtown Greenville at 7:30 pm for a full set of their timeless music, followed by a full set by Radney Foster, Bill Lloyd and their four piece band.

The Kenneth Threadgill Concert Series presents a special country-rock double bill featuring Foster & Lloyd in a full band performance, and the legendary Chris Hillman (Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, Desert Rose Band) performing with his longtime musical partner and great LA session musician Herb Pedersen (Linda Rondstadt, Desert Rose Band) at the historic Municipal Auditorium. These trendsetting duos paved the way for the California country rock sound of the 70′s, the edgy Nashville country of the late 80′s and the alt country of the last twenty years.

Get ready for “Turn, Turn, Turn” “Texas in 1880″, “Crazy Over You”, “Mr Tamborine Man” “Eight Miles High”, “Wheels” (Hillman/Gram Parsons co-write), “Sure Thing”, and on and on. Don’t be surprised if Chris and Herb play some bluegrass and gospel too. These artists should be listed in Webster’s under “country-rock” and “Americana”; they define and in many ways created and shaped the genres. This is truly an awesome double bill. Full sets by both acts, Chris and Herb duo acoustic, then F&L with their full four piece electrified band.

Foster & Lloyd

Texas music fans have a great lineup for the upcoming Old Settler's Music Festival.

Austin, TX — Iron & Wine, Amos Lee and Wimberley rising star Sarah Jarosz are among the acts just announced for the 25th annual Old Settler’s Music Festival, to be held Thursday, April 19, through Sunday, April 22, at the Salt Lick Pavilion and Camp Ben McCulloch on FM 1826 in Driftwood, in the beautiful Texas Hill Country just outside of Austin.

Iron & Wine

Tickets for the nationally celebrated event are available at www.oldsettlersmusicfest.org. The full lineup — a stellar array of award-winning roots, bluegrass and Americana artists — will be announced soon.

More than 30 acts — including headliner Iron & Wine, blues-rockers JJ Grey & Mofro, jam band Railroad Earth and 20-year-old Jarosz, who won the festival’s inaugural Youth Competition in 2002 — will perform on four stages in a relaxed outdoor setting with artisans, children’s activities and casual, blankets-and-lawnchairs comfort. One stage serves the festival’s popular Ben McCullough campgrounds, where impromptu picking sessions and sing-alongs stretch into the night.

Ticket packages range from platinum (four-day festival wristband plus camping and perks) to single-day wristbands. Camp sites will certainly sell out; about 50 percent of Old Settler’s attendees pitch tents for the duration. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Noting the quarter-century milestone, festival president Jean Spivey says, “We couldn’t be more excited. We’ve grown from a small, one-day festival at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock to a four-day, four-stage event.”

The festival also has grown into a major talent draw. The 2012 lineup so far:

Additional features will include interviews with revelers who make the journey to New York to be part of the global celebration, behind-the-scenes interviews with the people who produce New York City’s largest annual celebration, a live Facebook and Twitter chat with viewers around the world, and the story of how the party started in Times Square in 1904.

This will be TMJ’s first attempt at bringing live web streaming to our supporters. Wish us luck, and Happy New Year!

The Red River Jazz Band was formed 7 years ago by a group of musicians in Alexandria Louisiana who, according to Director and trombonist James Lacombe, “wanted to play the good old big band songs from the first half of the 20th century to keep the sound of that time alive. Our group is comprised of people who are teachers, lawyers, doctors, dentists, mailmen, nurses, artists and retired individuals whose ages vary from 30′s to 80′s. One of our members who is an avid supporter of Louisiana Public Radio asked if we would ‘auction ourselves’ during a recent fundraiser. The group graciously supported this endeavour.”

The result will be a musical trip back to the days of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey at MCT Theater,
Linden’s 1950 Post-War American Legion Hall, as they pay tribute to “The Greatest Generation.”

Doors open at 6PM and the show begins at 7PM. Tickets are $15. Organizers will present a slideshow WWII Veterans. Please send photos no later than Tues. Dec 6, 6PM to LindenMCT@aol.com. Be sure to include name and branch of service.

Texas music fans will have an easy time listening to the "adoptive Texas" sound of Heidi Newfield.

She’s not from Texas, but you wouldn’t know it from her sound. And with a new tour, Heidi Newfield will soon be seeing a lot of the Lone Star State.

Heidi Newfield

She’s Country Tour, presented by Pendleton Whiskey, begins tonight in Little Rock. But the Texas swing begins tomorrow. By the time it is over, Heidi will have performed in Dallas, Katy, and Helotes. The tour also includes rising star singer and songwriter Bridgette Tatum.

Bridgette Tatum

Heidi, of course, first rose to fame as the sultry-voiced lead of the country group Trick Pony. “Pour Me,” their first mega-hit, is considered by many to be a benchmark in the way country music changed in the new millennium. Other hits followed before the trio decided to go their separate ways.

Since then, Heidi has created a very successful solo career. “Johnny and June,” her tribute to friend Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, was nominated for multiple Grammy awards.

Paradigm Talent Agency Nashville is partnering with 343 Agency to promote the tour.

“Paradigm Nashville is proud to help launch this unique all-female tour,” said She’s Country Tour co-producer and Paradigm Nashville co-head, Mike Snider. “Heidi and Bridgette both bring high-energy performances and a ‘let’s party’ attitude that are perfectly suited for these venues.”

Texas Music Reporter will attend the show in Dallas tomorrow night at the Glass Cactus and will bring a review of the concert.

Ran Reid is known for his books on Texas music legends.

(Editor’s Note: The following comes courtesy of yourhoustonnews.com.)

One of the most versatile and prolific writers on the Texas literary scene comes to Montgomery County this month to discuss in extensive body of literary work.

Veteran journalist, novelist and biographer Jan Reid is the featured speaker for the Writers in Performance Series, scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the library at Lone Star College-Montgomery.

Admission is free of charge and the event is open to the public.

“His fiction writing is often compared to Larry McMurtry (author of ‘Lonesome Dove’ and ‘The Last Picture Show’ among others),” said Dianne Logan, spokeswoman. “His ‘The Improbable Rise of Redneck Rock’ is hailed at as ‘the bible’ for lovers of the Austin and Texas music scenes, profiling Willie Nelson, Kinky Friedman, Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and many others and the story of the 1970s emergence of the iconic Austin music scene.”

Reid’s other work includes “Comanche Sundown,” a novel whose characters include Comanche chief Quanah Parker, Billy the Kid and Bat Masterson, and which won the Jesse Jones Award for Fiction from the Texas Institute of Letters; and “Deerinwater,” a novel and winner of a Dobie-Paisano Fellowship.

Reid’s “The Bullet Meant for Me”, is a compelling reflection on marriage, friendship, boxing and his recovery from a deadly shooting in Mexico. His recent biography, “Texas Tornado: The Times and Music of Doug Sahm,” traces the career of the first American musician to capitalize on the 1960s British invasion who eventually moved to California where he became a star and invented the “cosmic cowboy” vogue.

His book, “Close Calls,” a collection of his magazine pieces, was a finalist for the Texas Institute of Letters Book of the Year Award. Reid’s much anticipated biography of Texas Governor Ann Richards will be published in 2112.

Reid is writer-at-large for Texas Monthly and a long-time contributor to the New York Times, Esquire, Slate, GQ and other national publications.

All Writers in Performance events are free to the public and include a book-signing reception. The series is made possible through a partnership of the Montgomery County Literary Arts Council; Lone Star College-Montgomery library, Conroe Commission on the Arts and Culture, Good Books in the Woods and SWIRL student magazine of art and literature.

Texas music star Kyle Park is preparing to release his latest CD.

Austin, TX — Country singer-writer-producer Kyle Park, whom the Austin American-Statesman calls “a young country artist in Texas with the potential for mainstream country radio,” will release on September 20 his third full-length album, MAKE OR BREAK ME.

The album features 15 originals, six all-new with four from his SPRING 2010 EP and five from him as FALL 2010 EP.

Members of Austin roots-rock band Reckless Kelly were on the field June 28 at Round Rock’s Dell Diamond to present three checks totaling $30,000 to members and representatives of three area youth baseball groups — The Miracle League at San Antonio, The Miracle League at Town and Country, and Del Valle Little League — proceeds from the band’s 3rd Celebrity Softball Jam, held May 1 at the ballpark.

The band also donated a Toro truck bed full of bats, balls, mitts and more from its inaugural Reckless Recycling Program, which asked Jam-goers to bring new and gently used baseball equipment to give to youth in need.

Thousands of fans filled the stands for the softball game and centerfield concert that featured two teams, Sultans of Sing and One Hit Wonders, made up of sports greats and musicians such as MLB players Greg Swindell and Kirk Dressendorfer, boxing champion Jesse James Lieja and members of Reckless Kelly, Micky and the Motorcars, and the Randy Rogers Band as well as Muzzie Braun, Dale Watson, Pauline Reese, Wade Bowen, George Devore, Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson and many others.

In three years, Reckless Kelly has raised more than $100,000 from its Celebrity Softball Jams, attended by nearly 20,000 fans.
