(Editor’s Note: The following story is courtesy of Billboard Magazine and the website for David Broza.)

David Broza only met the late Townes Van Zandt once. But he apparently made quite an impression on the Texas music icon.

Townes Van Zandt

When he died in 1997, Van Zandt — who had performed with Broza at a marathon Writers in the Round concert during 1994 in Houston — left the Israeli singer-songwriter a shoe box of unreleased poems and lyrics that Broza has now turned into “Night Dawn: The Unpublished Poetry of Townes Van Zandt,” a 12-track album due out Feb. 23 on S-Curve.

“It was very mysterious and very sweet and very challenging,” says Broza, who recorded “Night Dawn” in June with producer G.E. Smith at Manhattan Beach studios in New York. “It’s like something I have never experienced before. I’m just beginning to understand what’s happening here — that it’s happening. I only hope I’ve done those lyrics justice, turning that poetry into song as Townes would’ve liked.”

A “humbled” Broza almost didn’t make the album. He met with Van Zandt’s widow, Jeanene, shortly after his death and bowed to her request to let her approach more well-known Van Zandt fans such as Bob Dylan or Willie Nelson or Waylon Jennings. “I knew this was something bigger than me,” he explains. “I’m not in a position like those people.” But eight years later, when he was back in Houston, he called Jeanene to ask what had become of the lyrics. When she told him nothing had happened, they agreed Broza could take a crack and turning them into songs.

“They all deal with death — almost all of them,” says Broza, who wrote spent four years writing music to 10 of the lyrics, finished an 11th, “Harms Swift Way,” from a Van Zandt demo and capped the album with his own instrumental, “Too Old to Die Young,” that’s dedicated to Van Zandt. “But of course he would always cut away suddenly from death and turn them into very personal and deep love and affection for someone. But all of these are about departure in some way.”

David Broza

Broza was also disarmed by the recording sessions, which he and Smith and the band — keyboardist Jon Carin, bassist Conrad Korsch and drummer Shawn Pelton — completed in just five days. “I’m a pop artist; I’m used to doing 171 takes to every song and fixing every word,” Broza says with a laugh. “Everything here was, like, one take. If I had to sing in front of Townes and sing him those songs, I guess this is what it would be like.”

Broza will debut some of “Night Dawn’s” songs when he opens for Steve Earle on Dec. 18 at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. “After that I’ll do some of these songs in every show of mine wherever I go,” Broza says. “I’m interested in performing all over the country.”

The track list for “Night Dawn: The Unpublished Poetry of Townes Van Zandt” includes:

“Soul to Soul”
“Southern Cross”
“Holes In My Sole”
“Long Ball Hitter”
“Old Satan”
“Night Dawn (Silver Dollar)”

By Bianca Montes

The North Texas chapter of the National Songwriters Association International(NSAI) met for their initial meeting Dec. 8. The NSAI is a non-profit trade association dedicated to the assistance of songwriters. Judging from the participation of the members and potential members, the initial meeting was a networking success.

Regional coordinator Sam Moore took the first half of the meeting to go over the many benefits NSAI has to offer its members, including seminars, critiques by professionals, song contests, and Washington lobbying efforts. He also explained the typical monthly meeting format: 30 minutes of songwriter education, followed by an hour of song critiques.

Members were able to showcase their offerings to their peers for criticism. Highlights of the evening included music offerings from songwriters Steve Verrill, Amber Benson and Ray Phillips.

“Special Someone,” a slow story about searching for his soul-mate, was a nice choice by Verrill. While the song showed promise it was short of the perfect vocal to adding a bit of soul to the piece.

Quick and sassy filled the room when Benson showcased her offering “Grocery Store Hot,” a catchy number that had many toes tapping the floor. Perfectly composed for Sara Evans or Terry Clark, “Grocery Store Hot” is a song to which any woman can relate.

“Ying Yang Twins” started off with the perfect twang of violin strings. Phillips created a strong blend of instrumentation with great compliments to the singer.

Many of those present voiced their optimism that this chapter will be a success. They said the other chapters in the general area – in Fort Worth and East Texas – are too far away to attend on a monthly basis. By meeting in Allen, it is accessible for people from Dallas and Collin County to the state line. In fact, one member drove down from Durant OK.

The opening meeting of the North Texas chapter of the NSAI showed promise of aid for local songwriters. For more information about the NSAI visit their website at www.nashvillesongwriters.com.

A new chapter of the Nashville Songwriters Association International is forming. The North Texas chapter is designed to meet the needs of those members in Dallas and areas north to the Oklahoma border. The first meeting will take place:

Tuesday, December 8
7pm
Dodie’s Place Sports Grill
190 E. Stacy Road, Suite 1320
Allen TX 75002
972-678-4550

Dodie’s is on the east side of US Hwy. 75, at the Stacy Road exit, in the Village at Allen. Dodie’s sits across the street from the new Allen Events Center. I would like to thank Kyle McPherson, manager of Dodie’s, for allowing us to use their meeting room for our gatherings.

Some of you are already members of NSAI. Some of you may be members of a local songwriters association. Some of you may be new to the art. Regardless, NSAI has something for you. We do not compete with local groups. Rather, you will find that NSAI is complementary to, and often works with, local groups.

Our first meeting will be primarily informational. We will also go through the process of a typical monthly meeting. This includes an education section, followed by a song critique session. If you have a song you would like to present to the group, you may either perform it live or bring a CD.

I have been a member for several years, and can tell you my membership has greatly helped me in my personal songwriting journey.

Shelley King, 2008 Official State Musician of Texas, presents us with a new offering, Welcome Home, that that not only highlights the flexibility of her vocal talent, but also underscores the craftsmanship that she and the Subdudes (John Magnie, Tim Cook and Steve Armedée) put into each and every song. One factor of craft that really standouts out in this recording is King’s minimalist approach to instrumentation. She doesn’t overpower a song with excessive instrumental support. In fact, the title song opens with a simple acoustic strum that supports the power of the vocals (which are absolutely awesome). The wailing undertones provided by the accordion and percussive support of the other instruments paints a picture of old time gospel that is quite engaging.

Another minimalist song is King’s, “I Remember”. Basically using vocals, drums, and a touch of harmonica, King draws you into the energy of the song. The crispness of the recording allows the listener to feel every bit of the drum work. Each element balances the other perfectly.

Where fuller instrumentation is provided, King ensures that a musical balance is maintained. This balances allows her to take us on a musical journey that includes gospel numbers (Welcome Home, Grain of Sand), south Texas zydeco influenced melodies (Everything’s All Right), bluesy numbers (I Can’t Make It Easy), country-influence (How You Make Me Feel, Falling Fast) and even a reprise of “Welcome Home” that emphasizes the old-timey nature of the song through a simulated early radio sound. Each number supports the next in the album, though they may be of completely different styles.

“Summer Wine” is a song that has received international air play already. However, there are many songs on this album that should be getting radio time. A song like “Asking Too Much” exudes the Texas sound. A beautiful melody is supported with great vocals and accordion work; one finds themselves transported into a Texas frame of mind. “Grain of Sand” has a folksy gospel sound that draws you into the song with the deep bass vocal backup and the excellent organ work.

King shows the flexibility of her talent in this album. Going beyond the fact that she was the first woman selected for the post of Official State Musician of Texas, in Welcome Home, King shows that she is a master song craftsman; perfect instrumentation for the mood of her songs, supported by a fantastic cast of musicians. This is definitely an album to pick on your holiday gift list!

There will be a conference for songwriters on Jan 29 thru 31 in Austin where songwriters can attend classes on just about everything that has anything to do with the business of songwriting. Some of the best songwriters in the world will be there including Rodney Crowell (who is bringing Mary Karr too!!), Allen Shamblin (I can’t make you love me if you don’t/ and 15 other number ones), Chuck Cannon ( BMI Eight-Million-Air award…Great Guitar Player), Austin Cunningham (Ashley Judd/Dolly Parton and many more).

You already know of: Will Sexton, Bill and Ruth Carter, Monte Warden, and too many to name right now…We have a list of instructors and folks from the industry that are attending on our website and are adding to it daily. www.austinsongwritersgroup.com

This conference is a place to learn about the art of songwriting from folks that make a living doing it. It is also a place to meet some of the current participants in the industry from engineers and producers to song pluggers and publishers. There will be media and folks looking to hire sing/songwriters for house concerts or clubs as well as publishers looking for songs and entertainers. The great part about this is that it is very affordable. The cost of the whole weekend is 150 dollars for the next six days…and that includes your lunch on Sat. You must be a member of the Austin Songwriters Group. The membership fee for the songwriters group is 50 dollars a year…less than a dollar a week.

This is a great chance to meet these folks in a small gathering and hear some great music!

We will be at the Wyndham Hotel on south IH35. Stay at the hotel if you can because we pick all night and a lot of the guest instructors pick with us. You never know who might show up to play. This is our sixth year and it just gets better every year.

Please pass this on to any musicians that you think might be interested in this event.

Peace and Love

EDITOR’S NOTE: While waiting to perform last Saturday at the Lee Street Bar and Grill in Greenville, I saw a poster for a performer who had been there recently. Then today, I came across one of his CD’s. I listened to it and was very impressed by his voice, delivery, lyrics and melodies. In fact, I listened to it twice. I just looked up his web site. Below is the biography, background and philisophy of who promises to be an incredible story – a man who began as a snack food scientist. Please read the following on the Texas music recipe created by Max Stalling:

10 years…5 cds…respect as a songwriter… top flight band…an expanding and loyal fan base. Not TOO bad of a track record for a guy who never felt he really had any business being in the music business.

“I didn’t even pick up a guitar until graduate school,” notes Max Stalling. After high school in Carrizo Springs, Texas, Stalling went to Texas A&M in College Station and earned a master’s degree in Food Science. Stalling took the corporate road to Dallas in 1991, working for Rainbo Bread and then in product development for snack food giant Frito-Lay. “I had no expectation of even being in the music business. I just liked to write songs,” says Stalling.
Then, while listening to Dallas community radio station KNON, Max discovered a whole new chapter in his life. Townes Van Zandt, Robert Earl Keen, Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Rodney Crowell, Jerry Jeff Walker – singer/songwriters representing a musical heritage to which he had been nearly oblivious. Soon he discovered the emerging Dallas music scene at the Three Teardrops Tavern, a now defunct, but very central part of the Dallas and North Texas country music scene through the mid-90s. “I guess the 3Ts is where I must have stepped on a rusty guitar string and gotten infected with the music biz bug,” says Stalling.

Max Stalling views himself as a songwriter first and as a performer a distant second. This tidbit might come as a surprise to the multitudes of loyal fans that regularly attend his crowded shows.

Stalling composes songs that seem about the here and now yet seem to also have one foot planted in the past. Sporting a vintage LBJ style “open road” hat, which is dangerously close to becoming his trademark, Stalling’s shows are at once intimate and up-close with him chatting up the crowd between songs, and a ‘tour de force’ of sound on the shoulders of his top-shelf band.

With Jeff Howe on drums and percussion, Bryce Clarke on nylon-string guitar, electric guitar and mandolin and Jason Steinsultz swapping between stand-up and electric bass, Stalling brings together a show that blends an old-style country sensibility of danceable ballads with the slightly edgy elements so commonly seen in the “Texas Music” genre. Stalling and troupe seem equally at home on a huge honky-tonk stage in front of 1000 or playing an acoustic set in a tiny 50 seat coffee house.

Even without the benefit of a recent release, Stalling’s attendance numbers have continued to rise. “I chalk it up to the strength of the songs and the strength of my band,” comments Stalling.

Stalling released his 5th cd on June 12, 2007. Titled ‘Topaz City,’ this follows up 3 other studio projects (‘Comfort In The Curves’/1997, ‘Wide Afternoon’/2000, ‘One Of The Ways’/2002) and a live cd release (‘Sell-Out’/2006). ‘Topaz City’ is being self-released on the Blind Nello Records label.

Quick math shows this project coming on the heels of a nearly 5 year stretch without a studio-recorded batch of new songs – a near eternity in many circles. “Quite a few things have happened since I put out the ‘One Of The Ways’ disc back in 2002,” muses Stalling. “From a business standpoint, the bankruptcy of the distribution company handling my cds just months after I released ‘One Of The Ways’ really put a damper on my ability to come out with another project…just like it did to lots of other folks in my position. On a personal front, there were a whole slew of things that hit me pretty hard…girl problems, the extended illness and passing away of my father, topped off by an audit by our friendly IRS sure kept me from focusing on songwriting. That was a tough stretch of years.”

Stalling patiently bided his time, gathering a batch of songs that live up to his reputation as a songwriter. “I’m proud of every one of these songs…each for different reasons,” Stalling notes. Indeed, the songs seem to speak to Stalling maturing as a songsmith and vocalist.

With songs in hand, Stalling began to seek out a producer to help shape the overall sound of the project. Max tapped the über-cool “Off-Music Row” insider/outsider R.S. ‘Bobby’ Field to wear the producer’s hat. Field has been at the helm of many-a-hip production job for some of the genre’s most respected singer/songwriters…Todd Snider, Billy Joe Shaver, Allison Moorer, Webb Wilder and Hayes Carll to name but a few. “I talked to quite a ‘who’s-who’ list of people about taking this project on but it wasn’t until I hooked up with R.S. that I realized he was exactly the person I needed for this particular project. R.S. is the whole package… songwriter, gear-head, psychologist, music historian… everything you look for in a producer. Oh, and he’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever met in my life.”

The project was recorded in Austin at Bruce Robison’s new studio, Premium Recording Services. Jeff Howe and former band member Dale Clark and are featured prominently on the recordings. “This is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to use my road guys in the studio. I’m very proud of the life Jeff and Dale have given these songs,” says Stalling. “They poured their hearts and souls into this project and I think people will be wowed by what they can do.”

In June of 2008 Stalling was awarded a star on the South Texas Music “Walk Of Fame” in Corpus Christi, Texas. This recognition of other successful musicians from South Texas includes such notables as Guy Clark, Roger Creager, Bill Haley, Selena, Kris Kristofferson, Michael Nesmith (of The Monkees) and more.
So stands Stalling – poised on the edge of the next chapter in his career: armed with a strong, new cd being enthusiastically received by a loyal and growing fan base, respect from his songwriting peers and a stellar band to back him up.

Not TOO bad for a former snack-food scientist turned songwriter.

She wrote “Bubbles in My Beer” for Bob Wills without ever been in a honky tonk. Now, in death, Texas songwriting legend Cindy Walker has done something incredible again.
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum announced that Walker has left a very generous gift: her catalog of 500 songs, including many pop and country classics. The gift includes her share of the songs, including future royalties. This is the first donation of its kind to the Hall.
Walker’s two most famous works include Roy Orbison’s “Dream Baby” and Ray Charles’ “You Don’t Know Me.” But her works also include many Western swing standards. Bing Crosby, Ernest Tubb, Eddie Arnold, Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson are among those who have recorded a Walker tune. Nelson even released a tribute album called “You Don’t Know Me: the Songs of Cindy Walker.”
Her lyrics were pure and plainspoken. They often talked of romance, heartbreak and picturesque prairies. She had top 10 hit songs in every decade from the ‘40s through the ‘80s.
A native of Mexia, near Waco, Walker was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997. In 1970, she became the first woman inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. She was 87 when she died in 2006.
The Country Music Hall of Fame has not yet announced what it plans to do with the donation.

SUMMER IS A GREAT TIME TO JOIN NSAI OR RENEW YOUR NSAI MEMBERSHIP!

Do you want to know why? Because if you join or renew from June 1st through August 31st, our chapter will rack up a bunch of cash incentives points from NSAI, which means we can have some interesting touring programs and speakers! In order for us to receive these incentives, you must let me know that you’re re-upping your membership or joining for the first time, so we can let the membership people in Nashville know in time.

The evening is formatted very similar to the shows at The Bluebird Café in Nashville, presenting two rounds of three songwriters.
As I write this article, my brother is alive. By the time you read it, in all likelihood he will have died. What does this have to do with music?

I have always heard that music allows you to get in touch with and communicate your deepest emotions. This past week, I have learned that this is definitely true.

My brother, Rennie, was my hero and role model when I was a child. My father was a traveling salesman and gone every week. Rennie, nine years older than me, provided my male support. He was the one who first put me in touch with the magic of music. He let me listen to his albums: Roger Miller, Bobby Darin, and – yes – the Beatles. I loved the way John Lennon turned his collar up on the cover of Rubber Soul!

When Rennie joined the Navy, he gave me his albums for safekeeping. I played them, but I made sure nothing happened to him. And I still remember, one of the biggest thrills of my young life, was when he mailed me a copy of Hey Jude from overseas, before it had been released in the United States. I was the king of the neighborhood!

Over the years, as first he traveled, then I traveled, we always talked about music. When I started writing songs, he was one of my biggest supporters. He always loved hearing what my latest lyrics were.

For the past two years, he has bravely fought pancreatic and liver cancer. He is now losing that battle. I am in his home in Norfolk, VA right now. Rennie is under hospice care. In one respect, I am surprised he has lasted this long. But in other sense, it just doesn’t seem right that my hero will soon be gone.

When I arrived the other day, I started singing to him to calm him down. To my surprise, he began singing along with me. We sang I Hear You Knocking, Johnny Be Good, and Never Been to Spain. The one he could not stop singing was Black Betty. He sang it for everyone who came to see him. I told him if he showed up at the Pearly Gates singing that song, I was sure to be in trouble.

Since I have been here, I have completed three songs. Two touch the emotions I have been going through. The third, however, is my favorite. It has a co-writer: Rennie. We started by me asking him what his favorite things were. And it built from that. The song is called “Diamonds, Pickups, Water and You.” I will likely sing it at his funeral.

Songwriting has always been a creative release for me. These past several days, it has been my emotional therapy.

_________________________________________________________________________________

“The wealth of sense-knowledge belongs to perception, not to immediate certainty, where all that wealth was merely something alongside and by the way; for it is only perception that has negation, distinction, multiplicity in its very nature.” - The Phenomenology of Mind, G.W.F. Hegel

One of the most elusive elements that songwriters deal with is melody, the element in a song that at its best, resonates in our hearts, immediately captures our attention and lasts in our memory. The best melodies make us want to sing along with the radio or in the shower. The philosopher Hegel’s concept that perception is everything seems to be particularly true when it comes to melody.

There is a large amount of literature aimed at defining melody; explaining the basics: construction of note sequences and rhythm, intervals and patterns, chord structures and scales. Unfortunately, purely intellectual efforts to construct compelling melodies fall short of reaching that goal.

Yet the concept of what makes a particular piece of music more pleasing to the ear than others is intriguing. Talking to a person who consistently produces engaging melodies might be a useful approach. One person who writes ear-pleasing melodies is Lena Shammas.

Some writers (Annie Proulx, for instance) believe that the best way to learn how to write is to read. By extension, it may be that the best way to learn to write better melodies is to listen. You should listen to Lena Shammas and do your own research – with the melodies that she writes, the journey unfolds like the best of melodies, effortlessly, organically and with pleasure. You can check out her music on her first CD, “Open Your Eyes”, released in 2004 and available on Outbound Music.com. It’s a unique gem.

After you’ve had the chance to listen to Shammas, you’ll understand. I had the opportunity to hear and see Shammas at Anderson Fair, in Houston. The legendary Anderson Fair, still lighting prayer candles for live music.

It was a songwriter night, hosted by Ken Gaines, consummate performer and songwriter, joined by the bourbon-smooth guitar of Wayne Wilkerson. Clay Farmer was also along for the ride, in full acoustic songwriter mode, East Texas fundamentalist gospel honky tonk, country rock and more. Just another magical night at Anderson Fair.

The following week, Shammas was kind enough to spend a lunch hour with me, talking about songwriting and how it’s been a part of her life.

Global Perspectives

She was born in Kuwait into a Christian family. Her family left Kuwait while she was very young, and she then spent quite a bit of her childhood all over the globe – London, New York, Moscow, Poland, Hungary, Paris, Nairobi, and California.

As a result of her travels, she has been fluent in 4 languages. At the moment “three and one-tenth – I’ve started studying Spanish”. She has written songs with lyrics in Arabic, English and French.

When she was with her family in Moscow, she helped her father, a Kuwaiti diplomat, by translating Russian.

“I was about 9 or 10 in Moscow. I used to be fluent in Russian. My dad always needed me – he’d say ‘Call Lena – we need to talk to so-and-so’. You know, when you’re a child, you just pick up a language much, much easier.”

Because her father was an ambassador, family travel included a trip to New York City, to put up the Kuwaiti flag at the United Nations. She went to the local international schools where her father was posted and for awhile, a boarding school in Switzerland. She finished her high school years in Kenya, graduating from Nairobi International School and then went to Pepperdine University in California.

A global perspective at an early age. She also started music at an early age.

“I started playing piano when I was six. Just learning scales, do-re-mi, from a Russian lady. And then when I was 12, in boarding school in Switzerland, my roommate had a guitar. She never wanted me to use her guitar, but when she was out of the room, I used to borrow the guitar. And then I asked my parents for a guitar and it started from there.”

Shammas’ guitar playing is deceptively simple and elegantly placed behind her songs. The training in classic music shows, for example, in the song “Don’t Try to Stop Her” on her first CD. The song has a short bridge where the guitar work sounds almost like the beginning of a fugue with counterpoint – very Bach-like.

Another interesting facet is her ability to write gorgeous melodies. Her use of intervals and unexpected notes is beautiful and inventive. Without being derivative, her melodies are reminiscent of some of the best work of the Seals and Croft, Karla Bonoff or Joni Mitchell; for a more recent comparison, perhaps Sarah McLachlan or Sheryl Crow.

Working with a Multi-Platinum Producer

Her first CD is a wonderful and fascinating project, produced by André Cymone. Cymone is a supremely talented musician and producer who played bass in high school bands with Prince (long before Prince became the “Artist formerly known as Prince”) and also played bass on one of Prince’s early albums, “Dirty Mind”.

Then, in best Pete Best fashion, Cymone left just before Prince became a mega-super star. Cymone, however, went on to produce a number of high profile pop/R&B/dance acts in the 80’s, including the multi-platinum Jody Wately and Adam Ant. To have such an experienced and talented producer for a first CD project is a good thing.

“When I first came to Texas, I was getting into music…trying to see where I belonged. A friend of mine from Los Angeles came to town and he heard me singing. He said, ‘Let’s go to LA and see this producer friend of mine.’ We ended up meeting a record producer who apparently had been trying to get in to see André Cymone.”

As luck would have, a meeting was arranged.

“So we go and meet André and right away, André and I just clicked. I just really liked him and he liked my music and through kind of visiting, we found out who he was and right away he said, ‘I’ll do your CD’. His fee is ordinarily humungous, but without a fee, he did my CD.”

Shammas is very modest about her guitar technique and while it’s not laden with fret-blazing gymnastics, it is a unique and subtle fingerstyle, using notes to imply chords and counterpoint.

“While we were doing the CD with André, he said, ‘Instead of flying out, I’ll get a guy to come in and play exactly the notes’. And he brought in four really good guitarists. Then he called me back. ‘You know what, Lena? You need to come out here, I don’t know what you do, maybe it’s too simple, maybe it’s somehow awkward, but you need to come and do it yourself.’ So, I played my own guitar parts for the CD.”

Blending tradition into the future

While the production on her first CD encompasses primarily soft rock and pop, her lyric approach remains true to her Arabic roots.

“I kind of identify my songwriting with Arabic songwriting. Arabic songs are only about love. We don’t write about losing a house or tragedy. It’s only about love. I feel like my songwriting is only about emotions. So it’s part of a tradition.”

Shammas has respect for tradition, and like many successful musicians, hears her music in her head. And perhaps this is why some melodies can be so magic and so elusive – they come from within, from our hearts, our minds, our souls.

“I’ve tried to co-write with a couple of other people, and while we were writing, someone might say, ‘No, but you can’t do that note after that chord.’ And my way is, yes I can, because I hear it.”

Shammas is always working on new tunes. With global perspective, multiple languages, and melodies coming from her heart, head and soul, we can all be looking forward to her next release. It’s a good time to be alive.

I’ve been following the development of North Texas performing songwriter, Anna Thomas, for almost a year now. She has just released her first EP, Splash of Red, a locally produced venture. I have to say, I’m completely impressed.

Usually when you listen to a small regional release, you find yourself having to make a lot of excuses for shortcomings in the music, production and arrangement. Not so on this one, where the recording and production contain both elegant simplicity and intelligent complexity—all in just the right measure and at just the right time. To sweeten the deal, there isn’t a lame cut on the whole release. The big leaguers don’t even do that most of the time.

I had a feeling come over me when I first listened to this CD, and I can remember the exact moment I last had the same feeling. It was when I put Steely Dan’s Aja on the turntable for the first time and listened to it through some pricey headphones. The texture was perfect; the music engaging, snarky and just challenging enough (I mean all of that in a good way), with little musical surprises that made you feel like the artist was letting you in on something, if you would just listen. Splash of Red hit me just like that.

Anna must be an old soul. I haven’t told you yet that she is merely 13 years old. That means she’s just getting started, which excites me no end. If this is how she’s starting her career, my God, she will be a joy to watch if she decides to continue to develop her art.

The lyrics are very sophisticated for anyone’s age. You could compare her sound to Coby Calais, but she does some more interesting turns in her voice that I haven’t heard anywhere else, and her advanced musical and lyrical tendencies surpass the pop star category. The teens may get pulled into it, but I see her demographic as older and a bit more discerning than even, say, the average light jazz listener. This may limit Ms. Thomas’ following a bit, but mark my word, if she sticks with it her following will be rabid for her sound and her future releases.

Finally, some credit goes to a few people helping Anna perfect her sound and her recordings. This is not to take away one ounce of her talent, but every picture needs a great frame—and she has more than one. Front and center is Matthew Gaskins, a remarkable musician with a Masters Degree out of North Texas University. That’s impressive enough, but Mr. Gaskins is more phenomenon than mere musician. He has not only mastered a number of instruments—including his voice—but understands the holistic arc of a production and its arrangement. He collaborated with Ms. Thomas on the arrangements of all the songs, and produced Little Red and My Circle.

The songs Bleached, Trace of Light, and Break Apart were produced by Salim Nourallah, one of Mr. Gaskins colleagues. Mr. Nouralla’s production style on all of the instruments and vocals appears to be, “If it doesn’t need it [an effect], then don’t use it.” The dry, minimalist result is stunning, but only because Ms. Thomas is good enough to pull it off. I’ve been encouraged to try the same approach on my own material, and the idea scares me to death! Maybe after hearing Splash of Red, I’ll get inspired to try it myself.

Behind the scenes is another remarkable person, Ms. Thomas’ father, Scott Thomas. Scott is a wonderfully flashy bassist who was generous enough to play on my last EP, Rock the Big House Down. If Mr. Thomas is a “stage dad,” he’s a very gentle one. He’s been smart enough to stay out of the way of his daughter and her collaborators, only recommending ideas in the most gentle way, and letting the art develop like a mushroom instead of a project.

If there is room for improvement, it will be in Ms. Thomas live delivery. Having said that, a recent performance demonstrated that she is on an improving trend as we speak. It has nothing to do with the quality of her singing, which is confident and convincing the majority of the time. It more has to do with the “selling” of her songs, which starts from the minute you begin to introduce the number and follows through to the final notes. It’s all headed in the right direction though, and one of the more interesting developments has been watching her weave her very dry, understated humor into her act. I think once people “get” her and she works into a really comfortable zone, that we are going to be completely blown away. That’s as opposed to mostly blown away, which is where we are now.

· If you wish to present a song for group critique, you must sign a release form upon arrival.

· Due to the time factor, we will limit the group critique to the time allowed, which is a maximum of 8 tunes.

Song Coach can assist you in gaining some muscle in your writing to get you in top shape to compete in the commercial songwriting arena. Song Coach is available to work with one songwriter each month prior to the beginning of the workshop, from 6:00pm to 6:45pm, at Dosey Doe. Please let me know if you would like to book this slot.

JUNE IS A GREAT TIME TO JOIN NSAI OR RENEW YOUR NSAI MEMBERSHIP!

DEBUT OF OUR MONTHLY SHOWCASE AT MAIN STREET CROSSING

We hope that everyone will come out and support our first NSAI SONGWRITERS IN-THE-ROUND on June 29th, 7:30pm at Main Street Crossing, 111 W. Main St.(FM 2920), in Tomball. The evening is formatted very similar to the shows at The Bluebird Café in Nashville, presenting two rounds of three songwriters.

The first round features our NSAI Houston/Clear Lake/Houston North Metro performing writers, and the second round beginning at 8:30 features touring performing songwriters hosted by Connie Mims. This event will happen the 4th Monday of each month. Cover charge is $5.00. Here’s the June lineup:

7:30pm Season Ammons, Leslie Krafka, Haley Georgia

8:30pm Connie Mims, Bob Cheevers, Tres Womack

We hope to see you at a workshop or a round real soon!

~You Can’t Hear American Music Without Hearing Texas~

New Site: Texas Music Journal
If you know of any singers/songwriters or bands that would like us to review their albums, we would be happy to do so. They should send 2 CDs and their contact information to my office (Texas Music Journal, 8920 Pocono Dr., Plano, TX 75025). We have set a stiff goal for ourselves to have reviews for CDs on the website within 2-5 days after receiving the CDs. That gives us time to review the music and contact the artist for short interviews related to their music. We use 2 CDs as we peer review the material and then compare and contrast notes.

Regards,

This past weekend, we returned to Uncle Calvin’s Coffeehouse (www.unclecalvins.org) in Dallas expecting to listen to some talented performers do their stuff. And with depth beyond his years, Chris Rosser, a singer-songwriter from North Carolina, took us on an international tour of musical splendor.

One could try to classify Chris’ repertoire to folk music, but that would be placing a jewelry store in a gift box. His music cuts across boundaries paving new roads across the musical landscape and creating cross-culture genres like “Indo-billy”, “Turko-billy” and “world music fusion” by blending jazz, swing, gospel, folk, Indonesian, coffeehouse acoustic, and Turkish styles.

A gifted lyricist, vocalist and instrumentalist, his vocals are reminiscent of James Taylor and his piano tends toward Keith Jarrett and George Winston. Songs carry us through the hills and valleys of life. Melodies caress us with the warmth of an early summer breeze and glide us gently down as leaves upon flower covered fields. Lyrics paint the view from the windows of the soul. His vocal range is a playing field for the arsenal of musical instruments he commands (dotar, guitar, Turkish “banjo”, piano, just to name a few).

Growing up in North Carolina and hearing all of the family tales, he felt as if he had actually lived in Atlanta, TX. In “Deeper Than My Name”, Chris recounts some of the stories about his grandmother while she was still with the family in Atlanta. In “Atlanta”, Chris shares with us his journey to her funeral and his return to the tap root of his family tree. Her interment unearthed family history recounted in the song.

In his concert and in the CD entitled “The Holy Fool”, Chris’ messages transcend religious barriers, helping us realize the unity and commonality we share. We laughed, got choked up and met a man who admits, “I don’t have all the answers”. Even so, he has a perspective that many need to hear.

Chris dedicates himself to family and music as owner and operator of Hollow Reed Arts (www.chrisrosser.com), a recording studio in Asheville, NC named after the “hollow reed” prayer of the Baha’i faith. He travels in the U.S. and abroad doing what he can to establish a spiritual connection with audiences through his music. He is a graduate of the University of Miami and has a double major- sound engineering and piano.

Best of luck, Chris!

During recent musical travels, I met a singer/songwriter named Beth Kille. She is originally from Wisconsin, but now lives in Houston. I caught a recent show at a private event, Salon Nights on the Levee, in Dallas. And she showed her audience she has a lot of talent.

Beth performed with her drummer, Tony Kille, who Beth says “conveniently doubles as my husband.” Beth’s style ranges from folk/country to rock/jazz. Yes, she is a versatile performer. She reminds me very much of a young Sheryl Crow, who she looks to as one of her many influences. Beth led a rock group – Clear Blue Betty – for six years in Madison, Wisconsin. She moved to Houston one year ago.

Songs during the show included “Under,” a very good tune with a driving beat. “Only Skin” was inspired by a couple burned in a fire. Beth said they commented that they were used to themselves, but it has taken the world a little longer. “Say My Name” was a very entertaining one-string song. And “Through the Walls” was a little song, Beth said, “about stalking your neighbor – but in a nice way!”

During the show, which also included performances with her close friend Jessi Lynn, Beth sang and played guitar, mandolin and harmonica. Her voice is smooth and soft, with a high range.

As good as Beth is, she is often upstaged, as she was this night, by Buddy, her black Labrador. Buddy visited with audience members before working his way up on stage. At one point, he knocked over Jessi’s water bottle. “He must be thirsty,” Beth said.

Beth has several upcoming performances in the Houston area: April 23 at Anderson Fair, May 8 at Backyard Tavern, May 9 at Bohemeo’s, and May 18 at the Corkscrew. To learn more about this talented young artist, visit www.myspace.com/bethkille.

Some wonder whether or not they have what it takes to be a Christian music writer. What does it take to craft a Christian song? What inspires Christian writers? The answers vary, but the themes are the same: faith, surrender, life, commission and Grace.

Faith is the mortar that holds all Christians united. Each of us is a building block for the foundation of the Kingdom of God on earth. A Christian music writer crafts the masterpieces of his or her art upon this faith foundation.

Surrender is openness to God’s designs in our lives. We lay upon His mantle our plans with full knowledge and acceptance that His plans will change the roadmap we follow. Surrender opens our eyes, minds, hearts and souls to His touch. The Christian music writer surrenders to the will of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Their voice is the guide to his or her music.

To basic human perception, life is the sum total of our experiences on earth and the force which keeps us in motion. It is the period of time during which we occupy physical form and use our free will to follow the roadmap of our choice. Life is the time during which we rise or fall. The Christian music writer lives life as all do, sensing, observing, choosing, acting and listening and places these experiences into song.

We are all commissioned by God to act on His behalf. Many of the works of God are carried out by human hands. The common usage of this term suggests that we are to receive compensation or remuneration for fulfilling a commissioned work. Music of the soul is the work God has commissioned of the Christian music writer whose most important compensation is recognition that His music has touched or will touch the lives of many.

Grace is the salvation freely given to all who choose to follow in the footsteps of Christ. It is the gift that allows us to transcend from an abbreviated physical life into an eternal spiritual life. The Christian music writer sees Grace at work in life and captures its love and power in song.

In short, the Christian music writer recognizes God’s commission and freely chooses to surrender to His will by creating Grace-filled music about life.

Look about you and see life through new eyes. Be inspired. Be open. Surrender. Accept Grace freely given. You too can be a Christian music writer.

OK, you’ve written a few songs. Now what? Do your creations have potential? How will you know? And what can you do with them? You need a support group. And luckily, plenty of them exist.

Several years ago – before I had begun writing songs – I had the privilege of meeting country music legend Bill Anderson, backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. He was incredibly friendly to my wife and me. Then a couple of years ago, I saw Anderson on television, picking up a Grammy for his songwriting. I was so excited, I decided to email him. I congratulated him, saying I knew he would never remember our meeting. So you can imagine how I felt when he responded the next day, saying he certainly did remember meeting me. I decided to tell him about my songwriting, and asked him for his advice. Anderson said I should join the Nashville Songwriters Association.

It has turned out to be some of the best advice I have ever received. Even though I live in Dallas, I feel tremendous support from this group. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned professional, NSAI has a plethora of tools available. Weekly presentations are streamed live on their website for members, and are archived for future viewing. Members can submit ten songs a year for expert critiques. An annual songwriting contests offers the hope of notoriety for songwriters around the country. Regional and national seminars provide a lot of one-on-one and group support.

NSAI also provides a tremendous service for all songwriters. They lobby Congress for the rights of songwriters. Believe me, songwriters everywhere benefit from this. In addition, NSAI a couple of years ago bought the famous Bluebird Café in Nashville. This has long been the starting point for many performing songwriters. It was here that a relatively unknown Garth Brooks took his brand new song, Unanswered Prayers, and performed it live for the first time. My wife and I were there once on Open Mic Night. We saw members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band sneaking in through the kitchen to catch that night’s songs.

NSAI has chapters around the country. But in addition to that, scores of local songwriters associations also provide support. I am a member of the Collin County Songwriters Association. I look forward to the monthly songwriters circle. Steve Anderson opens his guitar shop to the songwriters, to share songs and critiques of the works. We have a lot of talent in our group, and I have learned a lot from many of the members. It always helps to have people listen to my songs and give advice. CCSA members also help each other in public performances. It is not uncommon for the president, Ryan Michael Galloway, to provide sound and lighting for members – then sit in and play a little bass. Michael “Mudcat” Reames, the association ambassador, often will sit in and add a little blues harmonica when asked. From my personal perspective, this is a huge thrill when he plays with my band. After all, Mudcat in the early 1970s made a 16-year-old named Steve Vaughn (yes, it was him) audition to join his band.

The Dallas Songwriters Association conducts monthly showcases for performing songwriters. This provides an outstanding opportunity to get public exposure to some really fine quality songs. As I said, groups such as these exist around the country for songwriters. A simple computer search will pull up the associations in your particular area.

If you are really serious about songwriting, I suggest you team up with a songwriters association. You have a lot to learn – we all do – and these groups can provide really useful knowledge. For example, from NSAI I learned that a song’s success is often determined by timing and patience – the right song, for the right performer, at the right time. A songwriter had a composition that he really liked, but he could not get a publisher to pick it up. He did not give up, pitching it non-stop for seven years. Finally, one publisher told the songwriter that he had a new group that might be interested. The group was indeed impressed with the song, and decided to record it. “Bless the Broken Road” became the first number-one song for Rascal Flatts!

From critiques to collaboration, songwriters associations provide tremendous support to those of us looking to tell our stories to a larger public.
